Microsoft Windows is all set for the official release of Windows Phone 8.1 in the coming months, but the developer preview of the Windows Phone 8.1 is already available for those with a developer account. The Developer preview is the same final release which others will get on their phones in a span of few months, but lacks only the firmware updates from the manufacturers such as Nokia etc (which do not matter a lot in the phone’s functionality). Now waiting for a few months for the official release is something which impatient people like me cannot opt for 😛 . So I decided to get the developer account and update my phone to Windows Phone 8.1. Now there is a feature or App called Cortana which is a counterpart of Apple’s Siri and Google Now but is much more advanced and intelligent then both of them. Cortana as of now is available to Windows Phone 8.1 users from USA region only. But you too can get it after changing your region from your own country to USA. Below are the steps mentioned to update your phone to Windows Phone 8.1 and get Cortana on it. Learn more about Windows Phone 8.1 on the Windows Phone Official Website.
Steps to update Windows Phone 8 to Windows Phone 8.1
>> Getting the developer account
One can get a Microsoft developer account free of cost from the Windows App studio. All you need is to go to Microsoft App studio website and sign in using your Microsoft Account (Outlook/live account) to sign up as developer: Microsoft App Studio
>> Downloading Preview for Developers on your Windows Phone 8
Install the Preview for Developers app on your Windows Phone 8. Link to the store: Preview for Developers After you are don installing the Preview for Developers App on your Windows Phone open it and it will ask you to login using your Microsoft account and then accept the terms and conditions. Now you are all set to update your phone to Windows Phone 8.1.
>> Installing the update
Now go to Settings >> Phone Updates and check for updates. Make sure that the phone is connected to wi-fi and also to the charger. When you check for updates it shows updates, mind it that in the beginning there will be a few smaller updates which would prepare your phone for the bigger update. And each update takes a bit of time to install so do not get panic if it stuck at somewhere, it’ll move on after some time. After you are done with the smaller update then comes the larger update which is around 500-700 MB as seen from the time to download it. After downloading the larger update the phone again restarts and this time it would take a bit more time to install then the previous smaller updates. After the update gets installed your phone is on Windows Phone 8.1.
